Yes, I uploaded another self-portrait even though I don’t really need to until next week. But I just finished editing this one and was really excited with the outcome!
This shot was semi-inspired by an artist, Carrie Hott, who recently came in to talk to our class. She was discussing an interesting sleep pattern called “segmented sleep,” where one’s sleep is interrupted by a period of wakefulness. The two periods of night sleep were called “first sleep” and “second sleep” in medieval England. Where one would wake up very late at night for about an hour or two. People would use this time to reflect, pray, or lie still and think. It was a time to yourself before you fell back asleep and went on with your daily routines. Now, most people have such late sleeping patterns due to school, work, social networking, etc. that this is replaced with insomnia, and is skipped entirely. But I am pretty sure you all have encountered this at least once in your life.
Ironically, I’ve been experiencing segmented sleep recently, then when Carrie brought it up, I knew I had to express it visually in some way.
